The game was created as part of the VARES architecture residency project “Liquid Landscapes” by Latvian artist Katrīna Marta Riņķe from Cēsis, who holds a master’s degree in visual arts and graphic design from KASK School of Arts, Ghent, Belgium. Liquid Landscapes, held in June 2025, explored water terrains in the Valga region, interpreting public space and examining how water shapes land – and how land, in turn, shapes water.
VARES is an architect-run residency in Valga, Estonia, located next to a small unnamed stream. Within the walls of a former school building, through summer and winter school projects and residencies, VARES fosters a space for inspiration, gentle reflection, invention, and the rethinking of architecture – at times, choosing not to build at all or in other words - encouraging slow and deliberate approaches to building.
Pebble game designer Katrīna Marta Riņķe, mathematics game theory consultant Elīna Valdmane, graphic designer Maria Muuk, translator (ENG/EE) Merilin Kaup, technical support VARES, arhitekts Artūrs Tols. The project is supported by the Estonian Capital of Culture, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, Valka Municipality, Valga Municipality, Tartu 2024 European Capital of Culture, TYPA, Very Berry.

Game Rules:
Each player throws 5 small stones, aiming at water zones: light blue (1 point), light green (2 points), peach (3 points), lavender (4 points), and pink (5 points). In the easy version, the winner is the first to reach the most points. In the harder version,
each player starts with a number from 1 to 21 and uses the color of their hits to apply operations: light blue = divide by 2, light green = multiply by 2, peach = subtract 3, lavender = add 5, pink = no change. After three throws, the goal is to reach a number that is divisible by 10, divisible by 5, or ends with the digit 1.
